RIAM Exams
The Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) is inviting applications for two separate examiner panels: Drama & Communication Examiners and Music Examiners. Candidates should be experienced, enthusiastic, and committed to supporting learners across Ireland through RIAM Exams.
Closing date for applications: Monday 29 September 2025
Exam sessions are held three times per year: generally Spring (Feb–Mar), Summer (April–June), and Winter (Nov–Dec). Examiners will work closely with senior examiners and the RIAM Exams administration team. Following interview, candidates will undertake training. Subject to successful completion, they will be invited initially to join the panel of examiners on a probationary contract.
Drama & Communication Examiners
Education and Experience
- Strong background in drama education
- Qualifications in drama, literature, or performance-based subjects
- Teaching qualification and/or wide-ranging experience in Drama & Communication teaching
- Knowledge of the RIAM Drama & Communication syllabus and exam system is recommended
- Experience as an actor, performer, director, playwright, or in other relevant industry roles
- Competence as a performer
Attributes
- Proficient English (oral and written)
- Excellent time management and organisational skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills (report writing, candidate interaction, working with Exam Centres)
- Positive and discerning interest in drama, literature, and the performing arts
- Capacity to demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of a wide range of literature, theory, and dramatic skills
- Ability to examine objectively and write constructive reports in support of marks awarded
- Professional presentation and adaptability
Please note: as part of the interview, candidates may be asked to perform a specific test piece from the syllabus, which will be provided in advance.
Music Examiners
Education and Experience
- Competent musician with a strong music education background
- Broad knowledge of instruments beyond own specialism
- Instrumentalists and vocalists must have a strong basic command of piano (minimum Grade V standard), as aural tests are played by the examiner during exams
- Teaching experience is essential
- Knowledge of RIAM music syllabi and exam system is recommended

Drama & Communication Examiner interviews: Week commencing 20 October 2025 (at RIAM, Westland Row)
Music Examiner interviews: Wednesday 22 October 2025 (at RIAM, Westland Row)
Training will follow in November 2025
Successful applicants will be expected to examine across both live and recorded exam formats (Music Examiners) or across the full Drama & Communication syllabus (Drama Examiners).
