Irish Theatre Institute is delighted to open the 2026 season of Table Read with a bold and exhilarating double bill by one of the most influential playwrights of our time, Caryl Churchill, Drunk Enough to Say I Love You? and Owners, directed by Dominic Dromgoole.

This script-in-hand reading brings together two of Churchill’s most provocative and formally daring works. Drunk Enough to Say I Love You? is a blistering, intimate exchange between two men that becomes a chilling meditation on power, desire, and political complicity. Owners, Churchill’s first professionally produced play, is a darkly comic and ferocious exploration of property, capitalism, and the brutal logic of ownership.

Together, these plays offer a thrilling snapshot of Churchill’s radical theatrical voice. Urgent, unsettling, and startlingly contemporary.

The reading will feature an outstanding ensemble of Irish actors (to be announced), followed by a post-show reception, inviting audiences and artists to gather, reflect, and continue the conversation.

Join us for an evening of fearless writing and shared discovery. Come along, be part of the room, and help shape the conversation.

OWNERS was first performed at the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs in 1972.

DRUNK ENOUGH TO SAY I LOVE YOU? was first presented by the Royal Court Theatre in association with the Public Theater, New York, at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Downstairs, Sloane Square, London on 10 November 2006.
