Theatre Forum is now Performing Arts Forum
Organisation: Performing Arts Forum
Closing Date: 28 Apr 2026 @ 1:00 pm
Type: Conference

Do you have a big idea that could make a change at an industry-wide, ecological level? If given the chance and resources, what practice, movement or organisation would you influence, invent, demolish or create?

We are looking for ideas with the potential to transform the way we work, and for a selection of these ideas to be presented at the Belfast Gathering.

You can apply here

These proposals should be for interventions that could benefit large communities of artists, artworkers, or the performing arts industry as a whole. This is an invitation to articulate your ideas for fresh and solution-focused thinking which could transform the performing arts industry across the island of Ireland for the better.

Our panel will select up to four ideas from this open call. Their inventors will be invited to present this transformational thinking as part of The Gathering speaker programme.

You can be as creative, utopian, experimental or blue-sky as you like, and you don’t have to have the details ironed out or practical access to actioning this plan. This is a space for thought experiments. Pitch a case study from abroad you think would work on this island, spotlight an existing local project that you think should scale nationally, or push for a change you want to see.

An Example:

The first idea being shared in this session comes from Performing Arts Forum’s research into the U.K.’s Theatre Tax Relief scheme and how this could be adapted to an Irish context to allow performing arts organisations to claim back up to 40% in cash for producing, running or touring live performances.

Your big idea could centre on any theme or subject area; as long as you think it has potential to change the industry for the better. It could be about funding, digital innovation, touring models, diversity and inclusion, audiences – the list goes on.

How to submit:

  • Send a maximum 500 word pitch or 1 – 2 minute video to this Google form outlining in brief the transformational idea you would like to share at The Gathering.
  • Send us your professional biog, CV or a link to your website so we can get to know your work.
  • Closing date for submissions is April 28th at 1pm.
  • Four ideas will be selected from the open call by Ruth McGowan, Curator, and Alice Malseed, Event Producer for The Gathering.
  • All submissions will be responded to by Wednesday May 6th.

What happens if you are selected:

  • You will be given a short slot to present your idea in person or via video at The Gathering on May 26th or 27th in Belfast.
  • You will receive a speaker fee of €300 along with a ticket to The Gathering. Ground transport to and accommodation in Belfast will be covered. If you are unavailable to attend in person, a video presentation is possible.

All great ideas begin with saying it out loud in a room full of people who care as much as you do. Seize your opportunity to share your transformational idea at The Gathering in Belfast this May!
