NCFA: Backing Basic Income for the Arts

The creative sector is at a point of critical change, where the cost of living and housing crises are rapidly reshaping the ecosystem. The Government is currently negotiating the budget, and the decision on whether to make a groundbreaking Basic Income for the Arts Scheme permanent will shape Ireland’s cultural future. A permanent scheme would ensure Ireland remains creatively vibrant, but without direct financial investment by the government, we will risk allowing our cultural fabric to diminish and disintegrate. You can see more about the Basic Income Campaign at www.NCFA.ie. We need art now, more than ever, to show us new horizons or what is possible, to challenge the narratives of division and crisis that are ever present on social media and in the news.

Call to Action

  • Members of the public, artists and stakeholder organisations are invited to fill in a six-question survey to inform the government’s decision on next steps, which will be made as part of the Budget in October. Anyone is welcome to contribute. Access the survey HERE.
The consultation period runs until 5 September 2025.
  • We need you to raise your voice now before the budget is decided. By speaking out, you’re not only helping to protect Irish artists today, you’re safeguarding Ireland’s future as a beacon of creativity on the world stage. Together, we can keep art alive.

What is the campaign?

  • Ireland is the first country in the world to introduce a basic income for artists pilot scheme.
  • The pilot has shown what’s possible: it sustains livelihoods, sparks innovation & demonstrates Ireland’s commitment to valuing creativity – from the smallest village to the global spotlight.
  • Making the scheme permanent would position Ireland as a creative powerhouse, protecting artists and ensuring culture continues to thrive in increasingly precarious times.
